NW- Structured Teaching for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Participants will engage in an immersive training designed to equip educators and support staff with practical, hands-on strategies to enhance the learning environment for students with autism. Participants will engage in activities that teach them how to effectively structure classrooms and lessons to meet diverse needs, emphasizing the integration of evidence-based practices such as visual schedules, reinforcement systems, communication systems and tools to support functional and social communication skills. Through interactive workshops and collaborative exercises, attendees learn how to foster meaningful engagement and communication in their classrooms while ensuring that instructional methods align with best practices in autism education. Student volunteers offer practitioners opportunities to experience real-world application.

This three-day intensive deepens your understanding of physical structure, work systems, routines, and task structure. Participants will practice assessing individual skills to tailor visual supports across various environments and learn proactive behavioral prevention. This session is open to all educators, support staff, and family members living or working with a child with ASD.


Important Session Information:


Course Requirements

Assignment 1: Students will practice observing students with ASD in the classroom and documenting their characteristics of ASD. During small group discussions, participants will identify how the characteristics may impact their learning in the classroom.

Outside of class, participants will observe a student with autism in their school, document their characteristics of ASD in 5 different learning areas, and reflect on how the characteristics might impact them in the classroom. The observation notes and reflection will be due 1 month after the last day of class. 

Assignment 2: 

Participants will be given a data packet with a variety of tools. During the class, participants will gain experience using the tools and have an opportunity to make decisions based on data after group discussion. 

Outside of the class, participants will be asked to take data using at least 3 different tools. Based on the data collected participants should reflect on the data and make instructional decisions as needed.

Assignment 3: 

Participants will be able to apply the concepts of structured teaching (physical structure, schedules, work systems, and task structure) to the student in their small group. 

Outside of class, participants will be asked to implement thte concepts of structured teaching. Students will need to submit photo samples of the structure created, as well as a reflection of how they worked, or how they will use if not able to implement immediately.
