NW - Deeper Learning on the FBA Process and How It Leads to Intervention Planning

This course will provide information related to the functional behavior assessment (FBA) process and how the process informs behavior intervention planning (BIP) for students displaying challenging behavior. Participants will learn about and practice collecting behavioral data via indirect and direct assessments (i.e. ABC data) on students they are involved with and will understand and practice analyzing the data they have collected. Content on how to use behavioral assessment data to inform interventions will be addressed. Content about the principles of behavior will be embedded throughout the course. LEA and AEA staff who are involved in conducting comprehensive FBAs and writing BIPs or consult on this process as a part of their role are encouraged to attend.

Learning Goals

  1. By the end of the professional development course, participants will establish common procedures to follow the problem-solving process related to behavior (i.e. FBA and BIP).
  2. By the end of the professional development course, participants will identify functionally aligned evidence-based instructional strategies for challenging behavior.
  3. By the end of the professional development course, participants will use effective coaching and consultation skills in the area of behavior. 

Course Requirements/Assignments

  • Attendance at all 3 days of your registered course
  •  In the time frame between Day 1 and Day 2, practice collecting indirect data (i.e. conduct behavioral interview) and direct data (i.e. ABC observational data) for a student
  • Submit a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) that you have written for a student
  •  FBA should be documented on the IEP form (copy of this form is uploaded to the shared Google Drive
  • FBA should include structured ABC data analysis within the document  
  • Submit a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) that you have written for a student.
  • BIP can be submitted on the state IEP form or the graphic organizer provided by the instructor on day 3 (copies of both forms are uploaded to the shared Google Drive).
  •  BIP must be for the same student the FBA was written for.
