NW - Mentoring and Induction Year 2 Beginning Teachers

The state of Iowa requires a two year induction program for all new teachers. This program is intended to positively impact classroom instruction, increase student achievement, and sustain quality teachers in the education field. Each session introduces the Iowa Teaching Standards, provides training in researched-based strategies and quality first instruction, leads new teachers through the requirements of licensure, and gives an overview of Chapters 25 and 26 of Ethics for Educators.  New teachers also dig into the Phases of a First Year Teachers Attitude Toward Teaching and learn about tools they can use in their classroom.

Reminder if you would like graduate credit and your district is NOT paying for it, please enter your PO amount for $1000 FIRST then change your credit type and pay for the graduate credit separately.

Leanring Goals

  • Provide knowledge and support of the Iowa Teaching Standards to improve quality classroom instruction
  • Understand the comprehensive evaluation and artifact collection process
  • Acquire the resources and tools necessary to successfully plan and deliver quality lessons/units
  • Gain knowledge of the Ethical Standards of Chapters 25 and 26 of the Iowa Code
  • Grow in their understanding of classroom management/culture and how that ties into instruction

Course Assignments

Year 2 Session 1:

Unpack Iowa Teaching Standard #6 and collect examples of proficiency and focus on SEBH in the classroom
Read a section of Tools for Classroom Instruction that Works by Silver, Abla, Boutz, and Perini and implement of a tool of choice in their classroom setting
Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their mentor
Discuss the Phases of First Year Teacher''s Attitude Toward Teaching graph with their mentor and collect suggestions to help during the phase they are currently relating to
Take video of the new teacher teaching and reflect with mentor 
Complete a new teacher self evaluation
Dig into Standards 1 and 2 in Chapter 25 of the Iowa Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics
Discuss the Reflection phase with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
Year 2 Session 2:

Year 2 Session 3:

Work with mentor to set up a classroom observation on another teacher in the school/district and reflect afterward
Dig into Standards 5 and 6 in Chapter 25 of the Iowa Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics
Discuss the MTSS framework and work through scaffolding examples that could be implemented into the classroom
Year 2 Session 4:

Learn about responsible and ethical use of technology and work through ethical scenarios
Dig into Standards 7 and 8 in Chapter 25 of the Iowa Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics
Discuss social media dos and don''ts

Grading Criteria

Classroom Observation Logs/Reflection Templates: 25 points x 3 = 75 points
Mentor/New Teacher Meeting Checklist: 25 points x 4 = 100 points
Self-reflections: 25 points x 2 = 50 points
Must participate in all 4 sessions
