Learning Goals

Course Requirements/Assignments:
Year 2 Session 1:
- Unpack Iowa Teaching Standard #6 and provide examples of proficiency and focus on SEBH in the classroom
- Learn about four elements of mentoring and apply one of them with their new teacher
- Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their new teacher
- Discuss the Phases of First Year Teacher''s Attitude Toward Teaching graph with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
- Watch video of new teacher and reflect together
- Complete a mentor self evaluation
- Dig into Standards 1 and 2 in Chapter 25 of the Iowa Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics
- Discuss the Reflection phase with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
Year 2 Session 2:
- Unpack Iowa Teaching Standard #2 and provide examples of proficiency
- Learn about four elements of mentoring and apply one of them with their new teacher
- Discuss the Phases of First Year Teacher''s Attitude Toward Teaching graph with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
- Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their new teacher
- Work through a lesson with their new teacher and observe the lesson being taught
- Dig into Standards 3 and 4 in Chapter 25 of the Iowa Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics
- Complete a Decision Making Ladder
Year 2 Session 3:
- Unpack Iowa Teaching Standard #5 and provide examples of proficiency
- Learn about four elements of mentoring and apply one of them with their new teacher
- Discuss the Phases of First Year Teacher''s Attitude Toward Teaching graph with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
- Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their new teacher
- Work with new teacher to set up a classroom observation on another teacher in the school/district and reflect afterward
- Dig into Standards 5 and 6 in Chapter 25 of the Iowa Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics
- Discuss the MTSS framework and work through scaffolding examples that could be implemented into the classroom
Year 2 Session 4:
- Unpack Iowa Teaching Standards #1 and #8 and provide examples of proficiency
- Learn about four elements of mentoring and apply one of them with their new teacher
- Discuss the Phases of First Year Teacher''s Attitude Toward Teaching graph with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
- Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their new teacher
- Complete a mentor self evaluation
- Learn about responsible and ethical use of technology and work through ethical scenarios
- Dig into Standards 7 and 8 in Chapter 25 of the Iowa Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics
- Discuss social media dos and don''ts
Grading Criteria:
- Classroom Observation Logs/Reflection Templates: 25 points x 3 = 75 points
- Mentor/New Teacher Meeting Checklist: 25 points x 4 = 100 points
- Self-reflections: 25 points x 2 = 50 points
- Must participate in all 4 sessions
