NW - Mentoring and Induction Year 1 Mentors

The state of Iowa requires a two year induction program for all new teachers. This program is intended to positively impact classroom instruction, increase student achievement, and sustain quality teachers in the education field. Each session introduces the Iowa Teaching Standards, provides training in researched-based strategies and quality first instruction, leads new teachers through the requirements of licensure, and gives an overview of Chapters 25 and 26 of Ethics for Educators. Mentors learn specific skills on how best to coach their new teachers through their first two years.

Important Session Information:


Learning Objectives

  • Provide knowledge and support of the Iowa Teaching Standards to improve quality classroom instruction
  • Understand the comprehensive evaluation and artifact collection process
  • Acquire the resources and tools necessary to successfully plan and deliver quality lessons/units
  • Gain knowledge of the Ethical Standards of Chapters 25 and 26 of the Iowa Code
  • Learn the elements of mentoring and apply them consistently with their new teachers

Course Requirements 

Year 1 Session 1:

  • Unpack Iowa Teaching Standard #6 and provide examples of proficiency
  • Learn about four elements of mentoring and apply one of them with their new teacher
  • Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their new teacher
  • Allow new teacher to observe them teaching and reflect together 
  • Complete a mentor self evaluation

Year 1 Session 2:

  • Unpack Iowa Teaching Standard #3 and provide examples of proficiency
  • Learn about four elements of mentoring and apply one of them with their new teacher
  • Learn about Coaching through Questions
  • Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their new teacher
  • Discuss the Survival phase with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
  • Work through a lesson with their new teacher and observe the lesson being taught
  • Learn about the model code of ethics and look over the 8 ethical standards in Chapter 25 of the Iowa Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics

Year 1 Session 3:

  • Unpack Iowa Teaching Standard #4 and provide examples of proficiency
  • Learn about four elements of mentoring and apply one of them with their new teacher
  • Discuss the Disillusionment phase with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
  • Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their new teacher
  • Work with new teacher to set up a classroom observation on another teacher in the school/district and reflect afterward
  • Learn about the ethical spectrum and work through ethical scenarios

Year 1 Session 4:

  • Unpack Iowa Teaching Standard #7 and provide examples of proficiency
  • Learn about four elements of mentoring and apply one of them with their new teacher
  • Discuss the Rejuvination phase with their new teacher and offer suggestions to help during this phase
  • Work through the Mentor/New Teacher meeting checklist with their new teacher
  • Complete a mentor self evaluation
  • Learn about responsible and ethical use of technology and work through ethical scenarios

Grading Criteria

Classroom Observation Logs/Reflection Templates: 25 points x 3 = 75 points
Mentor/New Teacher Meeting Checklist: 25 points x 4 = 100 points
Self-reflections: 25 points x 2 = 50 points
Must participate in all 4 sessions
