NW - Paraeducator Certification Course 3: Behavioral Supports

This is the third of three courses required for the Iowa Paraeducator Certification. (Completion of courses 1 and 2 is required before taking this course.) In Course 3, Behavioral Supports, paraeducators will learn about behavioral and emotional issues presented in classrooms today. The course also explores strategies for developing professional relationships with students and school personnel. Requirements for this course include a 10 hour practical experience to be completed in the classroom setting and an on-site observation. This course requires 30 hours to complete. Three of the hours will be during the face to face session. The remainder of the course will be completed online. An estimated 6 hours per week will be spent to complete the course in 5 weeks. Participants will need to have access to the internet to be able to complete the course.

Important Session Information:


Through a variety of activities, applicants shall explore and demonstrate the following list of competencies. (Detailed Lessons and Assessments for this course located at the end of the document.)

Emotional and behavioral. Under the supervision of a licensed education professional, the paraeducator will:

(1)      Assist in modeling and teaching specific appropriate behaviors, social skills, and procedures that facilitate safety and learning in various environments.

(2)      Assist in the implementation of individualized behavior management plans.

(3)      Document and report objective observations on student behaviors.

(4)      Assist in modifying the learning environment to manage behavior and social skills.

(5)      Recognize that there is a cause or reason for misbehavior and assist in determining the cause or reason.

(6)      Recognize, address, and report bullying.

(7)      Recognize and report atypical emotional behavior.

Professional relationshipsUnder the supervision of a licensed education professional, the paraeducator will:

      (1)   Demonstrate a commitment to work as an effective team member.

      (2)   Foster a professional and caring relationship with each student’s family.

      (3)   Develop and maintain positive and professional relationships with students.

Ethical and professional practiceUnder the supervision of a licensed education professional, the paraeducator will:

      (2) Participate in ongoing professional development.

      (3) Accept and apply constructive feedback.

      (6) Maintain a high level of competency and integrity.

     (10) Abide by Iowa law regarding the use of restraint and seclusion.
